Shortcut Virus

Postby dhernand on May 27th, '11, 08:51

A few students have reported a virus that turns their files into shortcuts on their external drives. As far as we know, this virus is being carried on personal drives from locations unknown and may or may not be infecting SCAD computers. However, there are steps they can take to clean their drives, and also view their files again. If any of them come to you, please feel free to forward these steps to them; which they must follow using their personal computers:

Please also be sure that your external hard/thumb drives have been scanned for viruses BEFORE inserting them into a campus computer. Here's how to scan your drive on your home computer:
Download and install Malwarebytes - choose full scan, and select your flash drive letter in addition to C (hard drive):

If you believe you have encountered the shortcut virus (all your files change to shortcuts), here's how to view your files again: ... uts-virus/

Please note - this virus does not seem to affect macs, so they may also plug their drives into Mac computers and see their files that way. However, they really need to scan their drives as well to remove the threat.
